Sacramento, CA - Several hundred public utility commissioners from around the country and suppliers they work with packed into the National Assn. of Regulatory and Utilities conference this month. Nearly nine out of 10 people interview agreed that utility companies need to do much more to educate consumers about smart grid technology and empower customers.
Harold D. Williams, Public Service Commissioner, Maryland, where they have turn down the idea so far, can not wait to see smart grid technology in his home state.

And the East Coast seems to have more of a challenge than the West Coast,
where California has taken the leader on implementing smart Grid technology.
Chairman David L. Armstrong of the Kentucky Public Service Commission
says there are lots of challenges and opportunities with smart grid technology.
Commissioner Stan Wise, Atlanta, Georgia couldn’t agree more with that notion.
“Research shows that 60 percent of the electricity generated in
this country is lost to inefficiencies, and the fact that smart grid
technology is green and substantially enhances grid efficiency
through improved outage detection and response helps utility
customers feel good about saving energy,” said Sarav Periasamy,
president and CEO, PERI Software. Periasamy who was a featured
speaker on “Cost Effective Solutions for Smart Grid,” at the
NARUC conference put it this way, "Smart Grid technology
transforms the way utilities can deliver power to customers,
but we need to educate and explain in layman’s terms just
how it works,” he said.
